Medeco Introduces a New Weapon in the Fight Against Cargo Theft

SALEM, Va., March 29, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The International Cargo Security Council estimates the U.S. economy loses $18 billion each year due to cargo theft. To help business owners respond to this threat, Medeco(r) has developed a new lock to protect trailers and cargo containers.

The G8R Series padlock is a strong, weather resistant lock, as well as an electronic seal. It was designed to withstand physical attack and resist damage from water and road salt. The padlock's body is constructed of solid stainless steel, and can be specified with either stainless or hardened steel shackles. And since a lock is only as secure as the person holding the key, users can select either a high security mechanical cylinder, or an electronic cylinder that adds access control and audit features.

The patented Medeco3 mechanical cylinder helps ensure that keys are only cut by authorized service centers, and only given to approved individuals. The NEXGEN(r) electronic cylinder stores an electronic record of every opening, and only grants access to specific keys based on time and date. The electronic cylinder does not require any wiring or batteries, so it can be easily moved between trailers or containers. Security Managers can program a NEXGEN key with a daily activation schedule and expiration date. The daily schedule prevents a key from being used outside of normal working hours, while the expiration date reduces the threat posed by lost or stolen keys.
