StockPickReport Commentary -- April 04, 2006

How do you know it's the top of the housing market? Simple. Look at this headline from Monday: "Construction spending rose to a record level in February as home building hit an all-time high despite a weakening in home sales, the government said Monday." (Source: AP)

Guess how many homebuilding stocks rallied on this news? None. How do you know a top in the market is almost certainly formed? Good news like this has no effect. But why not? Well, it could potentially be the last good news, and that means the ride is over. Like we've been saying for a year almost now, sell any homebuilding stocks you have like Beazer, Lennar, or DR Horton.

Here's another sector to not bother following: Banks. Stocks like Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), Washington Mutual... they have been stagnant for a year now. Think you'll get rich holding Citigroup? Well, you probably won't lose too much, but Citigroup's market cap is $236 BILLION making it one of the biggest companies in the world. They even scooped Traveler's Group out of the Dow a few years back. If you hold Citigroup, that's fine. Take the 4% yield. Just don't set your expectations too high for a mammoth stock like that.

Another day another rally for BHP Billiton and Suncor, our two big fundamentals and technical picks. BHP up 4.72%, SU up 2.32% on the day. This sounds familiar. It was last year I was writing this almost every day. Except last year it was just Suncor. Now it's another favorite with an undeniable trend upward. BHP Billiton is three times the size of Suncor, and every time it rallies even $1.00 it adds about $2.5 BILLION to it's market cap (what the company's worth). Astounding actually that on one day the company is worth $2.5 billion more than the day before.
