Airvana and NewStep Partner to Provide Security, Mobility, and QoS for Converged 3G/Wi-Fi Networks

Companies to Demonstrate Joint Solution at CTIA 2006

LAS VEGAS, April 5, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Airvana, Inc. (www.airvana.com), an innovator and leader in mobile broadband infrastructure based on 3G 1x EV-DO air interface technology, and NewStep Networks, Inc., the industry's leading provider of fixed-mobile solutions, today announced successful integration and testing of Airvana's new Universal Access Gateway (UAG) with NewStep's voice call continuity (VCC) solution that provides seamless mobility across fixed and mobile networks. In this configuration, the UAG provides security, IP mobility, and quality of service (QoS) for calls on the Wi-Fi network. These active voice calls are then handed off between the Wi-Fi and CDMA2000 1xRTT networks. Demonstrations will take place all week at CTIA 2006.

"In order for operators to enable fixed-mobile services for their subscribers, they will need a carrier grade, high-capacity gateway that connects IP-based access networks to their core networks and can scale to support hundreds of thousands of sessions," said Neil Baimel, president and CEO of NewStep Networks. "Airvana's UAG is uniquely designed to do just that, and will help to bring new voice and multimedia capabilities to market more quickly."

"With our EV-DO products, Airvana has demonstrated its ability to provide carrier-grade mobile broadband infrastructure, and the UAG will bring the same capabilities to the Fixed Mobile Convergence market," said Randy Battat, CEO of Airvana. "NewStep is a recognized market leader in delivering VCC solutions, as well as services that extend enterprise PBX capabilities to today's mobile phones, and we are pleased to see the UAG work so seamlessly in linking 3G networks with Wi-Fi."

The UAG is a fully-redundant gateway based on an Advanced TCA platform and supports over a million subscribers. The UAG resides between the 2.5G/3G mobile infrastructure and any Internet Protocol (IP) network, enabling voice, data, and multimedia applications to work seamlessly across the networks while protecting the carrier core from attacks. The UAG ensures that applications delivered over the IP network are secure, fully mobile both within and across networks, and receive necessary quality of service (QoS). Compliant with UMTS and CDMA standard protocols, the UAG provides a carrier-class solution for Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) deployments with integrated subscriber authentication, policy enforcement, and accounting.

NewStep delivers standards-based voice call continuity between mobile networks -- whether GSM, CDMA, or UMTS -- and Wi-Fi networks, using its Mobile Call Handoff product. Based on NewStep's proven Converged Services Node (CSN) platform, Mobile Call Handoff enables fixed, mobile, or broadband service providers to offer their subscribers a single number service that automatically routes calls over cellular or Wi-Fi networks, depending on which network matches their preferences and is most suitable. Calls are transparently maintained as subscribers move across network boundaries, and the user experience is unchanged whether they are making or receiving calls.
