EMS Wireless Announces DataNex II Backhaul Solution At CTIA Wireless 2006

Rapid Deployment of Cost-effective In-Band Backhaul Solution For Rural Areas; Flexibility to Migrate to Higher Spectrum Bands When Available; Supports High Throughput and Remote Alarming

LAS VEGAS, April 6, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- CTIA Wireless 2006, Booth #5843 -- EMS Wireless, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG), has announced upcoming availability of its DataNex II(tm) in-band wireless backhaul solution for cellular tower sites. The solution is highly cost-effective, providing data throughput equivalent to four T-1s or E-1s.

The DataNex II backhaul product represents EMS Wireless's next generation of wireless backhaul products. Feature enhancements over previous products include greater installation flexibility, additional functionality, and the ability to migrate to higher-spectrum bands as they become available. Among the new features and capabilities are the separation of the indoor unit (IDU) and the outdoor unit (ODU) to give carriers greater flexibility in mounting part of the DataNex II system near the antenna on the tower. This will help to reduce cable losses and improve the data link. Other improvements include a new overhead and control channel that allows remote alarming. The inclusion of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) will allow carriers to monitor and alarm the equipment through the Internet. Available in the 1850 to 1990 MHz spectrum band, the DataNex II backhaul product uses standard panel antennas, which minimize carrier cost for tower fees as well as mitigate wind-loading and zoning issues.

"We've provided all this functionality into a flexible package so it can provide a one-to-four T-1 backhaul or an Ethernet connection utilizing a carrier's existing frequency allocation," said Gerald Hickman, senior vice president and general manager, EMS Wireless. "By separating the IDU from the ODU, we have the capability to extend throughput to 155 megabits, compared to earlier throughput of 8 megabits."

The DataNex series of products is ideal for rural carriers with in-band spectral capacity as well as others seeking a rapid, cost-effective deployment solution. Because of the speed of deployment, the DataNex products have been widely utilized in hurricane-damaged areas of Mississippi, Florida, and New Orleans as a way of rapidly restoring T-1 service to cell sites in those areas.
