TASER Device Used to Arrest Gang Member After Stabbing

WASHINGTON, April 11, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from California's Hollister Free Lance, 19-year-old Andrew Lopez, a Norte'o gang member, was arrested Thursday night after stabbing a suspected rival gang member. The victim, Carlos Gonzalez, an alleged member of the Sure'o street gang, is believed to have agreed to give Lopez a ride to a family member's house earlier in the evening. Gonzalez told investigators that Lopez then ordered him to get out of the car and when he refused, stabbed Gonzalez in the stomach. Gonzalez attempted to run from Lopez but was stabbed a second time in the back.

Deputies found Lopez less than an hour after the carjacking when the stolen vehicle hit a parked car in San Juan Bautista forcing Lopez to take off on foot and hide in a nearby backyard. Residents spotted Lopez and called authorities. When deputies got to Lopez, he struggled and managed to hit and kick officers before a TASER(r) device was used to subdue him.

Lopez was taken to the San Benito County jail on charges of attempted murder, carjacking, auto theft, assaulting a peace officer and participation in a criminal street gang.
