Emulex InSpeed 4 Gb/s Embedded Switches Now Shipping in Xyratex SBOD Storage Enclosures

Award-Winning InSpeed Switch Provides Enhanced Performance and RAS for 4 Gb/s Solutions

COSTA MESA, Calif., April 25, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity solutions, today announced that Xyratex is shipping two new 4Gb/s switched storage enclosures that have integrated the Emulex InSpeed(tm) SOC 422 to provide embedded storage switching for superior performance while scaling reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS). The Xyratex 4835 and RS-1600-F4 SBOD(tm) (Switched Bunch of Disks) systems allow its customers to take full advantage of the benefits provided by InSpeed - the industry standard for connecting disk drives in the back-end of storage systems.

"Both Xyratex and Emulex remain forerunners in the development and adoption of 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel solutions," said Malcolm Muggeridge, CTO of Xyratex. "Working with Emulex helps ensure Xyratex delivers new benchmarks to maximize storage system performance while providing scaling and tremendous RAS benefits to ensure our customers' migration to next generation SAN solutions is seamless and cost-effective."

The industry's first 4 Gb/s embedded storage switching solution, Emulex's InSpeed SOC 422, lends enhanced RAS and increased performance to Xyratex's 4835 and RS-1600-F4 storage products by bringing switched connectivity inside the storage system. The Xyratex 4835 is an ultra-high-density, near-line SATA disk drive based storage solution that uses the InSpeed SOC 422 in a root switch position and is capable of housing up to 48 SATA drives in 4U of rack space for up 24TB of data in a single unit. It is ideal for the secondary storage needs of compliance, disk-to-disk backup and content address storage (CAS) environments. Meanwhile, the Xyratex RS-1600-F4 uses an embedded InSpeed SOC 422 for a SBOD implementation to deliver a true high performance Fibre Channel SBOD that integrates the power, flexibility and reliability of Fibre Channel (FC) point-to-point switching technology into its industry-leading 4 Gb/s FC enclosures. Emulex and Xyratex successfully demonstrated the new 4 Gb/s RS-1600-F4 SBOD at the Storage Networking World (SNW) show in San Diego, CA, as a part of the tiered storage demonstration in the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) booth.

"With over 10 million InSpeed ports installed and the leading supplier of embedded storage switches, Emulex was the first to market with a 4 Gb/s embedded storage switching solution," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex. "Xyratex has worked closely with us since the beginning to stay ahead of the curve for delivering 4 Gb/s products. Our unique point-to-point switching capabilities and backward-compatibility will enable Xyratex customers to advance their systems to leverage unmatched levels of reliability, availability and serviceability."

Emulex InSpeed embedded storage switches are the de facto industry standard for connecting Fibre Channel-based disk drives in the back-end of storage systems. Emulex's embedded switches are now shipping at more than two times the rate of the total Fibre Channel fabric switch ports from all vendors combined. As the industry's first 4 Gb/s embedded storage switching solution, the InSpeed SOC 422 provides 22 ports of connectivity in a highly integrated device that is ideal for implementing a wide variety of embedded storage applications, including SBODs, root switches and fully switched architectures. As with all versions of InSpeed, the SOC 422 is backward-compatible, permitting flexibility in implementation and avoiding costly upgrades.
