Police Used TASER Device to Safely Return Mentally Ill Patient to Hospital

WASHINGTON, May 1, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from Canada's Victoria News, a 55-year-old man suffering from long-term mental illness was brought back under hospital supervision Monday after a several-hour standoff with police. The unidentified man, released in early April from Eric Martin Pavilion, was brought to police attention by his sister who had not seen him in several days and who reported that he had missed several appointments with health-care professionals.

Police found the man in his Belmont Avenue apartment where he had barricaded himself and was wielding a hammer. Victoria police Inspector Les Sylven said the man appeared to be acting delusional and so police, with the assistance of the Emergency Mental Health Services team based at the Royal Jubilee Hospital's Archie Courtnall Centre, attempted to convince the man into voluntarily admitting himself to the hospital. When that failed, police used a low-impact projectile to get him to drop the hammer. The man continued to act irrationally until police used a TASER(r) device to subdue him.

The man was taken to RJH for minor injuries and was then released to the mental health ward. Suzanne Germain, a Vancouver Island Health Authority spokesperson, said the situation was handled appropriately by police and that police have been doing "great work" in dealing with such cases of mental illness.
