Fujitsu Incorporates Emulex's FibreSpy and InSpeed Switches to Offer the Industry's First SuperScalar, Fully-Switched Storage Architecture

New Fujitsu ETERNUS Storage Platforms Utilize FibreSpy SOC 804 and InSpeed SOC 422 Products to Create Next Generation Storage Systems

COSTA MESA, Calif., May 2, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced that Fujitsu Limited of Japan has incorporated Emulex's 4 Gb/s FibreSpy(tm) SOC 804S and 4 Gb/s InSpeed(tm) SOC 422 embedded storage switches into the new ETERNUS 4000 and ETERNUS 8000 storage systems. The new ETERNUS storage systems are the first to combine Emulex's root switch and SBOD(tm) (Switched Bunch of Disks) architectures to create a SuperScalar, fully-switched solution with unmatched reliability, scalability, cost optimization, and performance.

The ETERNUS 8000 uses the SuperScalar capabilities of the FibreSpy(tm) SOC 804S to allow storage controllers to scale well beyond the 126-device limitation in the back-end of a Fibre Channel storage system to connect up to 2,760 disk drives, or 184 disk enclosures, in a single storage system. This capability helps to greatly lower the cost of the storage systems because the storage controller can now be amortized across many more terabytes of storage. In addition, the new ETERNUS 4000 and ETERNUS 8000 storage systems use the InSpeed(tm) SOC 422 in an SBOD configuration combined with the FibreSpy root switches to create a fully-switched architecture that delivers the industry's highest performance and scalability in an ultra-reliable solution. Fully-switched architectures deliver the maximum reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) characteristics a storage system can offer because service actions can be performed at both the disk drive and enclosure level.

"As enterprise customers invest more and more in consolidated storage, they are interested in the additional flexibility afforded by the ETERNUS solutions we develop," said Tetsuro Kudo, General Manager, Storage System Unit, Fujitsu Limited. "With its continued advances in the InSpeed and FibreSpy product lines, Emulex is giving our customers the ability to realize the benefits of new storage concepts, such as fully-switched SuperScalar storage, while increasing storage capacity within a storage system without sacrificing performance."

"The industry has long accepted Emulex's InSpeed technology as the best way to improve RAS and performance while scaling within a storage array," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Emulex. "Combining InSpeed with FibreSpy enables Fujitsu to further capitalize on a fully-switched architecture by allowing customers to build an ultra-reliable, tiered storage solution. FibreSpy brings a remarkable set of flexible and scalable storage options for Fujitsu's customers, with the high level of RAS our customers have come to depend on."

With the advanced storage architectures created by systems including the FibreSpy SOC 804S and InSpeed SOC 422, enterprises can institute tiered storage and information lifecycle management policies within a single storage system. IT managers can allocate disk drives with differing capabilities to applications that may also have differing RAS or performance needs.
