New Series, Sunday Music Matinee Offered This Summer


PHILADELPHIA, May 4, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Penn's Landing Corporation is proud to announce a new Sunday series for Summer 2006. Spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon by the river and enjoy traditional favorites performed weekly by local orchestras. The Sunday Music Matinee Series will feature music, dance lessons, and other fun activities for the whole family. With this free concert series, three different acts will entertain all members of the family on three summer Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

For three Sundays from July 30th through August 13th there will be a featured local orchestra on the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing. Vice President of Programming, Jodie Milkman explains, "We envisioned this series as a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon. With great intergenerational appeal, it's an outdoor concert for parents, grandparents and grandchildren featuring family entertainment accompanying each performance."

The series starts on July 30th with The Brian Pastor Big Band, Philadelphia's Premier eclectic jazz ensemble featuring some of the finest jazz and commercial musicians from the Tri-state area. Now in its tenth year of pleasing jazz enthusiasts in the Delaware Valley, The Brian Pastor Big Band features the best in contemporary big band sounds created by the world's top composers. Since the band was formed, they have a long history of playing venues in the Philadelphia area, including the Casino Deli, Blue Moon Jazz Club and the 23rd Street Cafe. The depth of the band's 500-tune play list is truly astounding and the musicians sound quite at home with all the styles they approach. On August 6th Mike Trombetta's Metropolis Big Band will fill the air with a repertoire of sophisticated standards and swing tunes on sax, Dixieland songs of the south on clarinet, Latin specialties on flute along with a variety of vocals. Mike Trombetta's Metropolis Big Band captures the mood of a time when dancing to a sixteen piece orchestra was common. By concentrating on creating a modern sound, combined with a song selection customized for each performance, this orchestra has acquired a reputation that leaves the audience satisfied beyond compare. This is the seventh consecutive year Mike Trombetta's Metropolis Big Band has performed at Penn's Landing. To conclude the series City Rhythm Orchestra will perform at Penn's Landing on August 13th, 2006. The City Rhythm Orchestra has been dazzling audiences for years with their distinctive style and sound. Talent, professionalism, and a love of music is what makes the City Rhythm shine brighter than the rest and enables them to attract attention all across the United States.
