HOUSTON, May 15, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Port of Houston Authority commissioners, Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, and more than 70 invited representatives of media and the maritime community on Monday, May 15, attended a special "sneak preview" of the Port of Houston Authority's Bayport Container and Cruise Terminals. A guided bus tour of the Bayport site highlighted special features that reflect PHA's unwavering commitment to economic development, customer service, environmental friendliness, and preservation of the quality of life in local communities.

As construction nears completion for the grand opening later this year of the first phase of the most modern container terminal on the U.S. Gulf Coast, four electric container cranes arrived aboard a vessel from Shanghai, China, and have begun being intricately dismounted to the terminal's first wharf. The installation of the industry's next generation of cranes at Bayport will be a significant enhancement to the PHA's capacity for handling containerized cargo, which is projected to grow at a phenomenal rate of 16 to 23 percent annually over the next several years.

Located adjacent to the container terminal, the first phase of the PHA's Bayport Cruise Terminal is targeted for completion in Spring 2007.

Overall, the innovative design features and construction techniques at the site of the Bayport Container and Cruise Terminals greatly minimize impacts on the environment and neighboring communities.
