Experience the Gripping Saga Behind New Mexico's Statehood -- New Book Presents Fascinating Look at State's Many Great Stories and Personalities

ALAMOGORDO, N.M., May 23, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Developing territories into states has great obstacles as seen through the history of the United States. Not only does it require strong political will and sacrifices, it also demands a lot of patience, responsibilities, perseverance as well as adjustments on the cultural and logistical levels. These are themes that readers will marvel at as author Virginia A. Tepfer presents to them a fascinating look through American history with her compelling new book Chamizal: Territory-War-Statehood.

Chamizal tells the story of an Army Major and his family who live in America's Southwest toward the end of the nineteenth century. The book features stories that describe hardy and diverse people: ancient people of small pueblos, wandering Native American tribes, Spanish explorers and colonists, Mexican rulers, and American settlers. During America's western expansion, Territories become states; yet New Mexico languishes. Not until participation in the Spanish American War is New Mexico recognized as being worthy of statehood. Through real and fictional characters, the book clearly depicts the problems New Mexicans faced as they changed from the Code of the West to American justice.

When compared to other books, Chamizal is very unique as it collects the many different New Mexico tales and combines them into a chronological and engrossing novel. The story about New Mexico's transformation from territory into a state is gripping, detailed and makes a great reference for research. The interaction between fictional and real-life characters add depth and flexibility to the story which will definitely win the attention of students, history enthusiasts, and New Mexicans. Chamizal is bound to give everyone an appreciation of their history and it is now available for your reading pleasures online at Xlibris.com and at major bookstores and libraries nationwide!
