In an award letter to Northrop Grumman, Ronald E. Johnson, chief of industrial waste for the HRSD said, "We often tend to focus only on the negative aspects of environmental regulations, therefore it is with great pleasure that we are able to recognize and honor your environmental excellence."

Northrop Grumman's Newport News shipyard was recognized for meeting discharge limits in 2005 as well as meeting technical and administrative requirements that are mandated by HRSD permits.

"As a company, we are committed to continuous improvements in our environmental programs," said Frank Thorn, manager of environmental engineering at Northrop Grumman Newport News. "This commitment is not only good for the environment, our employees and the citizens of our community, but it also makes good business sense. These awards acknowledge the coordinated efforts of thousands of employees throughout the shipyard."
