SEATTLE, June 29, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Washington Council for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (WCPCAN)/ Children's Trust Fund of Washington (www.wcpcan.wa.gov) announces 17 recipients of the statewide 2006-2007 Pathways to Prevention grant program.
"These programs represent an important balance of both proven and promising strategies that have the greatest potential to contribute to the optimal health and well being of children and families in Washington," says Joan Sharp, WCPCAN executive director.
The grant awards combine federal and state funds, and are matched by funds provided by local communities. Programs selected for funding range from nurse home-visiting programs to services that help homeless teen parents.
WCPCAN is the Washington State recipient of federal funds through the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) program. The CBCAP program supports individual state efforts to create and operate statewide networks of community-based and family centered support programs which strengthen families and reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect.
"Every child deserves the very best start in life. When we focus our efforts on providing families with the best possible support from the beginning, we lay the foundation for a lifetime of opportunity," Sharp adds.
