Police TASER Device Saves Two Lives in New Mexico

WASHINGTON, June 30, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from the Cibola County Beacon in New Mexico, Grants County Police Department recently reported that they successfully used TASER(r) devices in two unrelated incidents that could have required deadly force.

The first incident occurred the evening of June 16, 2006 when Officer Monica Porter and Sgt. Gilbert Gonzalez responded to a domestic violence call at 9:15 p.m. and found Sampson Sam, 27, with a bloody face holding bloody razor blades. Officer Porter aimed her firearm while Sgt. Gonzalez aimed a TASER device. After initial compliance, Sam changed his mind, picked up a razor and charged at the officers. Sgt. Gonzalez used the TASER device knocking and the officers were able to detain him. Sam has been charged with aggravated assault on a household member with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, battery and false imprisonment.

Assistant Police Chief Rob Hall said that the incident "showed great control on the part of both officers. It was clearly a life threatening situation." Sampson Sam, who was treated at the hospital, said he was grateful the officers used a TASER device and that he had no idea what he was thinking during the incident.

The second incident occurred that same evening at 10:30 p.m. Officer Salvador Corral responded to a call about a 73-year-old man falling and cutting his wrist. When the officer arrived, the man was sitting in his car and armed with a knife prompting Corral to initially pull his gun. As Officer Corral attempted to talk the man out of committing suicide, he was able to switch his gun for his TASER device and use the device to gain control of the man.
