After The Bell Market Commentary

According to Bernard Schmitt, "On Wednesday, the Commerce Department reported a trade deficit that rose by 0.8% to $63.8 billion in June versus a revised April deficit of $63.3 billion. Economists expect the trade deficit to worsen in the coming months to reflect oil's current price of $75 a barrel. The Energy Department reported that the nation's supply of crude oil dropped by 6 million barrels last week to 335.3 million barrels. While supplies are still 2% greater than last year, the steep plunge surprised analysts. Light sweet crude for August jumped 79 cents to settle at $74.95 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold prices rose to more than $650 an ounce. Rising oil prices sparked fears of inflation and sent the markets tumbling. The Dow fell 121.59, or 1.09 percent, to close at 11,013.18. The Nasdaq fell 38.62, or 1.81 percent, to close at 2,090.24. The S&P 500 index fell 13.92, or 1.09 percent, to close at 1,258.60. The Russell 2000 index fell 13.22, or 1.85 percent, to close at 701.17."
