Learn How to 'Retire With Attitude' at Mercer County Community College This Fall

WEST WINDSOR, N.J., July 28, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- While baby boomers are expected to revolutionize traditional retirement, for many the prospect of a long expanse of free time, dealing with the aging process, and learning to make good financial decisions can be daunting.

According to Mercer County Community College's Director of Community Programs Lorna Strang, "The more information we can gather in the years leading up to retirement, the better choices we will make." Strang has developed a new series of noncredit courses for new retirees and those planning on retiring called "Retire With Attitude," built around four essential areas: work, economic security, good health and personal fulfillment. The fall 2006 series is part of the comprehensive offerings of the college's Center for Continuing Studies.

Long-time business educator Nunzio Cernero, who headed the college's Small Business Development Center for many years until his "retirement" two years ago, will return to teach the opening sessions, starting on Sept. 12. He'll also teach a class about finding jobs and starting a business after retirement, which meets Nov. 16. "Many retirees start a business in a field of special interest to them," he said.

Marge Smith, a consultant in nonprofit management who is the former executive director of the Princeton YWCA, will teach a class in "Mind Maps" on Nov. 6 and 13. An organizational tool, Mind Maps help you focus on, order and prioritize your dreams, visions, goals, skills and ideas, she says. As an active volunteer herself, she will also teach a class on Dec. 7 about finding meaningful volunteer work that matches your skills and interests.

In a similar vein, "Life Planning After 50," taught by Tom Caines, is an interactive workshop that delivers an alternative perspective and road map for creatively planning the second half of your life. "We will examine the beliefs, myths and assumptions related to the stage of life formerly known as retirement," he says. The class meets on Saturdays, Oct. 21 and 28, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Classes in financial planning will help participants clarify their investment goals, increase income and portfolio growth and reduce taxes. Keith Becker says you will leave his four-session course, "Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement" with a comprehensive plan designed for your specific needs. "The information you receive will pay you dividends for the rest of your life," he said. The class meets Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 26.

Ed Kurcharski, CFP, will offer a course on "Understanding the Reality of Your Financial Future," which will review financial strategies intended to increase the probability of financial success, including a retirement income you cannot outlive. The class meets on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
