Police TASER Device Prevents Suicide Attempt

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from North Carolina's Asheville Citizen-Times, local police were serving mental commitment papers to a West Asheville woman Wednesday when the woman used a pair of 10-inch knives to cut her own wrists and then charged at the officers.

The 48-year-old woman had already cut one of her wrists before officers arrived at her trailer home on Dysart Street. While officers urged her to come out of her home, she slit her other wrist and then charged at the officers in a fit of rage. When she was within 10 feet, a TASER device was deployed in order to incapacitate and disarm her.

West District commander Lt. David Rutledge referred to the incident as "textbook use of the TASER." Rutledge further stated that had a TASER device not been deployed, "the results would have been pretty tragic," and deadly force would have been necessary.
