NASDAQ Announces August Market Performance Statistics


NEW YORK, Sept. 6, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. (Nasdaq:NDAQ) today announced its consolidated market performance statistics for the NASDAQ Market Center, INET and Brut trading platforms for the month of August.

NASDAQ continued to capture a greater percentage of market share and share volume in NYSE-listed securities. During August 2006, NASDAQ's average daily total share volume in NYSE-listed securities was approximately 637 million, compared with 618 million in July and 330 million in August 2005. Matched market share in NYSE-listed securities increased to 12.5% in August from 10.7% in July. NASDAQ's touched market share in NYSE-listed securities rose to 26.0% in August from 22.9% in July.

NASDAQ's total market share in NYSE-listed securities in August was 28.1%. Included in the total market share figure for August is 15.6% in NYSE-listed securities executed by broker-dealers and reported to NASDAQ.

In addition, NASDAQ's market share in individual NYSE-listed securities grew to higher levels in August:(1)

Total market share in NASDAQ-listed securities was relatively unchanged at 76.5% in August compared to 76.2% in July. Included in the total market share figure for August is 27.8% in NASDAQ securities executed by broker-dealers and reported to the NASD/NASDAQ Trade Reporting Facility (TRF), a facility of NASD that is operated by NASDAQ, compared to 27.4% in July.

Matched market share in NASDAQ-listed securities was unchanged in August at 48.8% and touched market share in NASDAQ-listed securities in August increased to 55.3% from 55.1% the previous month.

"Total market share" in NASDAQ-listed securities is based on all share volume reported to the consolidated tape using NASDAQ-operated systems. This includes total share volume of NASDAQ-listed securities that are executed on the NASDAQ Stock Market LLC, NASDAQ's recently launched national securities exchange, plus trades reported through the NASD/NASDAQ Trade Reporting Facility (TRF), a facility of NASD that is operated by NASDAQ, as a percentage of total consolidated NASDAQ market volume. Shares routed to other market centers for execution are not included in "total market share". This data is single counted.

"Total market share" in NYSE-listed securities is based on total share volume of NYSE-listed securities that are executed on the NASDAQ Market Center, INET and/or Brut books, plus trade reported volume as a percentage of total consolidated NYSE market volume.

Matched market share represents total share volume of NASDAQ or NYSE-listed securities that are executed on the NASDAQ Market Center, INET or Brut books as a percentage of total consolidated NASDAQ or NYSE market volume.

Touched market share represents total share volume of NASDAQ or NYSE-listed securities that are executed on the NASDAQ Market Center, INET or Brut books plus volume of shares routed to other market centers for execution, as a percentage of consolidated NASDAQ or NYSE market volume.
