TASER Device Ends Suicide Attempt, Damage to Patrol Car

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from the Poughkeepsie Journal in New York, a 34-year-old man who stabbed himself and later did several thousands of dollars worth of damage to an East Fishkill patrol car was arrested early Monday morning and charged on various counts including felony criminal mischief. Scott Belton of Poughkeepsie became hostile with police around 2:55 a.m. after his girlfriend called officers to the Martin Road home. There, police were met by a confrontational Belton who emerged from the house with a butcher knife while arguing with his girlfriend.

A second unit arrived on the scene and officers Ken Knapp and Paul Gaston worked to calm Belton who responded by stabbing himself with the knife. Belton was then separated from his girlfriend but continued to act out by stripping off his clothes and, grabbing a baseball bat and a "club" anti-theft device, began smashing the entire front of an East Fishkill patrol car. Using the butcher knife, Belton then started stabbing the windshield.

Belton was kept at gunpoint by three agencies until a sheriff deputy arrived and deployed a TASER device, subduing Belton for arrest. Sgt. Corey Ehrhart of the East Fishkill police department said that the use of the TASER device is "probably what kept him from getting killed." Belton was transported to the St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he remained as of Monday morning.
