Emulex Industry-Leading AV150 Intelligent Storage Processor Now Shipping With McDATA Application Services Module

AV150 Marks Industry's First 20G Intelligent Storage Processor to Cross the One Million IOPS Barrier -- Optimized for Performance and Scalability

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 31, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Storage Networking World -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) announced today its AV150 Intelligent Storage Processor is now shipping with McDATA's Application Services Module (ASM). Together, the complementary solutions will enable robust, high performance advanced fabric services for McDATA's enterprise-class customers. Designed to work in appliances, arrays, intelligent switches, and modules such as the McDATA ASM, the Emulex AV150 offers the most cost-effective, integrated and scalable hardware solution available for storage virtualization and other advanced services environments.

As the industry's only intelligent storage processor with built-in FC interfaces and crossbar, the Emulex AV150 enables a cost-effective system design and provides hardware acceleration for unprecedented performance. Using a split-path architecture, the AV150 provides up to 1.4 million IOPS and 2300 MB/s of throughput. These features enable a new class of storage applications with hardware-acceleration, offering up to 10 times the performance of existing systems.

"The availability of the AV150, now shipping with the McDATA's Application Services Module, marks the latest milestone of Emulex's end-to-end storage virtualization strategy," said Ameesh Divatia, general manager and senior vice president of Intelligent Network Products at Emulex. "Users employing a solution like the McDATA Application Services Module, an appliance, or an intelligent array controller with the AV150, benefit from a cost-effective design, unprecedented performance and field-proven reliability."

"McDATA continues its history of introducing unmatched storage solutions to the market with its high-performance Application Services Module that integrates the Emulex AV150 processor," said McDATA Chief Operating Officer Todd Oseth. "Like Emulex, McDATA is committed to providing best-in-class products with the best price/performance for the end user. The integration of the AV150 enables us to deliver advanced fabric services with uncompromised performance and flexibility for enterprise storage networks."

The McDATA Application Services Module is a standalone module designed with an open application program interface (API), so that McDATA can team with OEMs and other partners to deliver advanced services to existing fabrics, quickly, non-disruptively and without any SAN hardware replacement requirements. The ASM's modular architecture allows it to connect into any switch or director, based on fabric from any vendor or OEM. Unlike appliance offerings, McDATA's ASMs use a true "split path" architecture, which allows a single point of control and scalable data movement.

Emulex's AD1500 Intelligent Storage Adapter, based on the AV150, coupled with its FabricStream(r) firmware and driver software, round out Emulex's 20G intelligent storage processor products. The Emulex AD1500, available in a convenient PCI card form factor offers four Fibre Channel ports and is the industry's first intelligent storage adapter, optimized for performance within appliance-based storage virtualization environments. Its split-path acceleration of intelligent devices architecture takes the best of both in- and out-of-band approaches to deliver significant performance increases.

Emulex's FabricStream software includes firmware and drivers that enable storage virtualization applications to take advantage of the underlying hardware acceleration functions. The rich API exposes a wide variety of functions that can be used for applications, including storage pooling, non-disruptive migration and heterogeneous replication. The FabricStream API is fully aligned with the T11.5 FAIS working group to meet evolving industry standards. Emulex has previously announced software partners supporting this API that include StoreAge, Incipient, Kashya (acquired by EMC), Alacritus (acquired by Network Appliance) and FalconStor.
