FierceGameBiz Announces Winner of 'BrainPong' Competition

Winner Uses Famous Poem as a Glib, Provocative Commentary On Sony PlayStation 3

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- FierceGameBiz (www.fiercegamebiz.com) today announced the winner of the inaugural BrainPong, an interactive competition designed to provoke discussion within the video game community. Rick Lucas, founder and CEO of Lightplay Studios, used the 1873 Lewis Carroll poem "Jabberwocky" to answer the question: "Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) president Katz Hirai recently said the PlayStation 3 will have a lifespan of 10 years, and called it a 'fantastic value' at $600. To what extent do you agree or disagree with those remarks, and why?"

Lucas' response begins: "'Twas brillig and the slithy games / Did gyer and gimble in the press; / All mimsy were the value claims, / And ten-year lifecycle B.S." His response earned him a choice of a 60 GB PlayStation 3 or two Nintendo Wii consoles of which he choose the PlayStation 3. Lucas' response will also be featured as a "Spotlight" in the FierceGameBiz email newsletter and Website.

"Lucas knocked it out of the park," said Nathan Eddy, editor of FierceGameBiz. "What could be more entertaining and more creative than hijacking Lewis Carroll's famous poem and turning it into a spot-on analysis of the imminent battle everyone is waiting for? At exactly 100 words, Lucas' answer wasted no space, exercised loving care and precision and delivered the best answer to the question posed in the BrainPong Competition, hands down."

"Everybody knows that the videogame industry (http://www.fiercegamebiz.com/) is full of creativity, but the entries in our first-ever BrainPong competition took it to the next level," said Jeff Giesea, president of FierceMarkets, the parent company of FierceGameBiz. "BrainPong is an example of how FierceGameBiz is becoming not just the gaming industry's top source of daily news, but its water cooler, too."

The BrainPong competition drew more than 800 entries commenting on the $600 price point of the Sony PlayStation 3 in 100 words or less. Each entrant had the option to choose one of three possible prizes: one Sony PlayStation 3, two Nintendo Wiis, or a surprise prize. Fifty percent selected the PlayStation 3 as their prize choice, 30 percent chose the two Wiis, and 20 percent voted for the surprise prize. The contest was open only to residents of North America, and FierceMarkets employees and their relatives were not eligible. Winner selection was based on originality, wit and brevity.
