CDG Commends SeaMobile and UTStarcom On Plans for Deploying An All-IP CDMA2000 Network At Sea

Deployment Demonstrates the Power, Flexibility, Compactness and Cost-Effectiveness of CDMA2000

COSTA MESA, Calif., Nov. 28, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) commended SeaMobile on their announcement to deploy UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000 all-IP CDMA2000(r) networks in various divisions of their maritime industry business. The networks will provide wireless voice and broadband data services to multiple market segments, including commercial cruise liners. The deployment demonstrates the flexibility, compactness and cost-effectiveness of IP-based CDMA2000 technology.

"The CDG is pleased to see that SeaMobile and UTStarcom are taking advantage of CDMA2000's adaptability," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "The partnership demonstrates creativity and attention to detail with regards to CDMA2000's technical performance, footprint, and economics. Now CDMA2000 subscribers will have high-performance wireless services while they travel or work at sea."

UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000 aims to provide wireless operators with a complete, all-IP solution to reap the multiple advantages of 3G networks. The solution is designed to offer a smooth migration path for CDMA2000-based providers, allowing them to utilize emerging technologies such as CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A as they become available. SeaMobile Enterprises is the dominant global service provider of at-sea communications, connectivity and content services, and provides always-on connectivity to a vast array of services for businesses, government entities and consumers.

"The most compelling aspect of our MovingMedia 2000 architecture is that it does not require traditional TDM transmission backhaul," said Jack Mar, president of the CDMA division at UTStarcom, Inc. "The technology works seamlessly over a satellite backhaul because the smaller CDMA2000 IP-based packet transmissions reduce the bandwidth requirement, which makes it ideal for maritime deployments."

CDMA2000 is delivering 3G performance at least two to three years ahead of competing technologies, and has emerged as the fastest, most robust and secure air interface for a wide variety of challenging environments. CDMA2000 has become the technology of choice for gaining access to the entire range of communications made possible through IP connectivity. In addition, CDMA2000 has been the technology of choice for military and/or disaster response teams who need to immediately deploy robust and secure mobile wireless networks. As the technology evolves, CDMA2000 will only increase in prevalence across the globe.
