Chatsworth Data's Optical Mark Reader Technology Used in 2006 Election

Optical Reader Technology Used in Los Angeles County to Verify Ballot Entries

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Nov. 29, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Adera Mines, Ltd (OTCBB:AAML) announced that the optical mark reader (OMR) technology of its wholly owned subsidiary, Chatsworth Data Corporation (www.chatsworthdata.com), worked to near perfection in the November 7 election in Los Angeles County. The county used the InkaVote Plus system, manufactured by Election Systems and Software and containing Chatsworth's OMR technology, for reading and tabulating votes. According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, "Los Angeles County's new InkaVote Plus machines, which use an optical scanner to check ballots for errors, worked like a charm."

"It shows that we're protecting people's vote the way they want to cast it," said county Registrar Conny McCormack in the LA Times article. The InkaVote Plus system, which utilizes Chatsworth's optical mark reader technology, was used in the county's 5,000+ precincts.

According to the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, the InkaVote system was selected to comply with the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002 following de-certification of the county's previous and obsolete Votomatic punch card system. The system was selected in part to, "provide the public with easy access to quality information and services that are both beneficial and responsive." The InkaVote Plus system allowed voters to cast ballots privately and independently and alerted all voters of any over-votes. It also resulted in enhanced customer service to voters, who benefited from the opportunity to have their ballots reviewed for errors by the equipment prior to casting their votes. According to the Register-Recorder/County Clerk's office, another consideration in choosing InkaVote Plus was fiscal responsibility.

"Our optical mark reader performed at an extremely high level of reliability throughout the election," said Stewart Asbury, President and Chief Executive Officer of Chatsworth. "We are pleased with the results and believe they will play a strong role in enhancing voter confidence in the ability of these systems to meet the demands of our election process."

Asbury said the optical mark reader provided immediate feedback to voters before they ever left the polling station, while also providing a critical audit trail capability in the event that a recount was needed.
