Department's First Use of TASER Device Prevents Potentially Deadly Confrontation

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to reports from the San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio police successfully deployed their first TASER device Wednesday night on a man claiming to be armed with a machine gun and 3,000 rounds of ammunition. Alamo Heights police contacted the SAPD around 7:30 p.m. to report a man in a red pickup driving south on Broadway and threatening to harm himself and others with his machine gun. San Antonio police pursued the vehicle at a "slow chase" to the access road of Interstate 35 near the New Braunfels Avenue exit where the man jumped out of the pickup. Officers surrounded the man and drew their weapons. The suspect refused to obey police orders and began making movements, "as if you reach for something," said police Sgt. Jim Prendergast. An officer then deployed his TASER device, allowing police to quickly take the man into custody.

"It's a good thing," said Prendergast of the TASER device. "It probably saved this young man's life." The SAPD started equipping a limited group of officers with the less-than-lethal alternative on Dec. 20.

The man was taken to Metropolitan Hospital for observation Wednesday night. A search of his vehicle failed to turn up a machine gun or ammunition. The suspect could face charges of evading arrest.
