TASER Device Ends Hostage Situation, Brings Police Shooting Suspect Into Custody

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices released the following News Alert:

According to reports from KRQE News out of Albuquerque, a man who opened fire on an officer after being pulled over for a stolen car and later held a man hostage Monday is in custody following a standoff with police. Officer A.J. Barela pulled over 36-year-old Jay Ulibarri after spotting him in the stolen vehicle around noon on Monday. Ulibarri fired several shots at Barela, penetrating the windshield of his patrol car and shattering the passenger-side window. Barela was not hit but was cut by flying glass.

The suspect made his way to an apartment complex on Coal and Harvard in Southeast Heights where he broke down the door of Raul Pacheco's home and took Pacheco hostage. Pacheco told reporters that Ulibarri walked into the apartment with a pistol in his hand and appeared frantic as he screamed and cried to police negotiators over the phone. When negotiations failed, the Albuquerque Police Department SWAT team took over, making Pacheco fear for his life.

"I said 'No, no, they are going to kill me along with him,'" recalled Pacheco.

SWAT officers used a TASER device to subdue Ulibarri and end the hostage situation. Both Pacheco and Ulibarri were taken into custody but Pacheco was soon released after it was determined that he was not an accomplice in the incident. Ulibarri remains in jail. No one was hurt during the arrest.
