American Specialty Health Launches Silver&Fit, a National Program That Empowers Older Adults to Stay Active

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 31, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Leading personal health improvement company American Specialty Health (ASH) announced today the debut of Silver&Fit(tm), an integrated self-care approach for seniors that provides unique fitness, nutrition, and health education programs.

Launched Jan. 1, 2007, the Silver&Fit program supports seniors as they begin or maintain a regular exercise regimen and learn how to make healthier choices in their daily lives.

Members receive a no-cost membership at a local participating fitness club, with access to cardiovascular equipment and free weights, as well as amenities such as whirlpools, exercise classes, and saunas, where available. In addition, members may participate in onsite exercise and healthy aging classes specifically developed by ASH to address seniors' unique health and wellness needs. Classes are taught at select fitness clubs by in-house program managers chosen by the individual exercise facilities and certified by ASH wellness subsidiary Healthyroads, Inc. and the National Academy of Sports Medicine, a prominent certification organization for personal trainers.

Unless required by their health plans, Silver&Fit members pay no copays, coinsurance, or deductibles to participate in these activities.

Members who do not have access to a participating fitness club, or who simply prefer to work out on their own, may choose to enroll in the Silver&Fit@Home distance learning program. Silver&Fit@Home features Internet- and DVD-based healthy aging classes designed specifically for seniors, plus walking and/or exercise kits that include fitness tools such as a pedometer and handheld weights.

Other program features include SilverandFit.com, a full-service Web site offering seniors access to a library of healthy aging, fitness, and nutrition information; health product discounts; quarterly newsletters; and practical health status trackers and self-care tools. SilverandFit.com features audio clips and larger font options, and members can use the Web site to enroll in Silver&Fit, locate a participating fitness club, or learn more about their individual program options.

"Through Silver&Fit, ASH offers an integrated self-care program that addresses seniors' unique health care needs and goals, and empowers them to take charge of their health," said ASH chairman, president, and chief executive officer George DeVries. "We are pleased to offer older adults the health education and motivational tools they need to succeed in maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle throughout their 'silver' years."
