TASER Device Prevents Suicide Attempt

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to reports from the Allentown Morning Call in Pennsylvania, an East Rockhill Township man held a knife to his throat and threatened to stab two therapists Friday at the Success Rehabilitation Center where he was a patient. Jordan Gibson, 30, was part of the center's inpatient program that allowed him to come and go as he pleased. The center treats those who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

Around 5:15 p.m., Gibson, apparently upset with his treatment plan, grabbed a butcher knife with a 12-inch blade from the center's kitchen, said Pennridge Regional Police Chief David Mettin. Gibson held the knife to his throat, threatened to stab two therapists and sliced a wall. When Pennridge Patrolmen Stephan DiGiovanni and Fred Roesener arrived on the scene, they found Gibson in the parking lot still brandishing the knife.

"I'm not dropping the knife. It's going to be a standoff and you are going to have to shoot me," said Gibson.

Officers then deployed a TASER device to attempt to subdue the man. After the first attempt failed and Gibson started to approach the officers, they again deployed the TASER device forcing Gibson to drop the knife and be taken into custody. Gibson was committed to the Bucks County Prison and was arraigned Monday on charges ranging from aggravated assault to disorderly conduct.

"This gentleman could have been easily shot and killed, so I commend both of the officers," said Mettin.
