SWECO continues to win environmental contracts in Africa

SWECO VIAK has been chosen to prepare a decision-making basis for better utilization of water resources and future investments in and around a number of tributaries to the Nile in Sudan and Egypt. The contract is worth around EUR 540,000 and is scheduled for completion in November 2007.

SWECO VIAK's assignment is to collect, analyse and evaluate existing data for water resources and soil erosion, as well as the potential for agricultural and forestry use, in order to propose development measures for three areas along the Nile that have been selected by the Sudanese and Egyptian ministries of water resources.

”SWECO VIAK's study will serve as a basis for decision on future investments in the water sector aimed at bringing about significant improvements for both the population and the environment within a period of around three years,” says Tove Adolfo Lilja, Assignment Manager at SWECO VIAK.

The study is part of the two countries' joint efforts to achieve effective, environmentally sustainable and equitable water usage and to promote cooperation between the countries in the Eastern Nile Basin.

A total of 350,000 people will be affected in Atbara, north of Kartoum, and in Dinder National Park and Ingessana Mountain in eastern Sudan. SWECO VIAK will also conduct a study on sedimentation in Lake Nasser/Nubia, which is causing major problems due to heavy erosion.

The client is ENTRO, Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office and funding is being provided by the Nile Basin Trust Fund, which is administered by the World Bank.

SWECO is the Nordic region's leading provider of consulting services with combined expertise in engineering, environmental technology and architecture. SWECO has around 4,200 employees in eight countries and recorded annual sales of approximately SEK 3.9 billion in 2006. The company has projects currently underway in some 60 countries worldwide. The SWECO share is quoted on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
