Leading Wireless Companies Demonstrate Support For Ultra Mobile Broadband at CTIA Wireless 2007

Industry Leaders to Present the Merits of UMB at CTIA Special Interest Seminar

ORLANDO, Fla., March 26, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- CTIA WIRELESS 2007 -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced a lineup of wireless industry leaders who support the Ultra Mobile Broadband(tm) (UMB(tm)) technology solution. Executives from Alcatel-Lucent, Hitachi, Huawei, LGE, Motorola, Nortel, QUALCOMM and ZTE will join the CDG at CTIA Wireless 2007 to participate in the CDG's first UMB seminar, entitled Ultra Mobile Broadband: High-Performance Mobile OFDMA Solution, taking place on Tuesday, March 27, from 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. in room 303A/B/C of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

"The wireless community is enthusiastic about UMB; its leading-edge mobile broadband capabilities will set the performance bar for advanced mobile OFDMA solutions," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "These key performance characteristics will become integral to the wireless industry's most prominent infrastructure and technology providers. We are pleased to feature some of these companies at our first UMB seminar."

"UMB is a compelling OFDMA solution designed from the ground up to deliver high-speed broadband data, and optimized to support VoIP services under highly mobile conditions. The advanced features, together with a scalable IP architecture, enable UMB to support a large selection of IP-based, concurrent and converged services that require low latency and improved spectral efficiency. We are excited to be able to offer these capabilities to our customers," said Mike Iandolo, president of Alcatel-Lucent's CDMA/EV-DO business division.

"Seamless interoperation between existing networks and UMB will be a key advantage for operators," said Toshiro Suzuki, Senior Vice President, Mobile System Development, Hitachi Communication Technologies. "By basing their next-generation mobile broadband services on UMB, operators can gradually build-out their networks, focusing on satisfying large metropolitan regions first; then gradually expanding their deployments to offer a wider coverage footprint. Our technology will help operators take full advantage of this interoperability feature."

"One of the key differentiators we see with UMB is the ability to support a significant number of VoIP users simultaneously while maintaining high data capacity," said Charlie Chen, senior vice president, marketing and product management, Huawei USA. "As wireless services evolve toward more concurrent multimedia services, VoIP becomes critical to offering features like social multimedia networking, video telephony, low-delay gaming and other rich media services. We see our technology as a great match for leveraging UMB's inherent quality of service and VoIP capabilities."

"Motorola recognizes that wireless broadband is going to be accepted as a technology that meets the ever-growing demand for greater speed, coverage and mobility," said Darren McQueen, vice president, IMS, CDMA and LTE Broadband Access Technologies, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "We look forward to the opportunities wireless broadband will provide in moving forward faster and achieving critical missions."

"UMB is expected to give existing operators an affordable option to upgrade their networks and to give new market entrants a flexible platform for launching mobile broadband services," said Doug Wolff, vice president and general manager for CDMA, Nortel. "Its flexibility in accommodating a variety of deployment scenarios is expected to make it a very compelling option for operators of all sizes. We anticipate significant market opportunities."

"QUALCOMM is an avid proponent of high-bandwidth OFDMA technology and the value it offers wireless operators in delivering rich multimedia services on a converged, all-IP network," said Larry Hartigan, senior vice president of QUALCOMM. "Our efforts to advance FLASH-OFDM technology have helped QUALCOMM support the world's largest mobile OFDM broadband service deployment. Building on this success, we see UMB as the next phase of the mobile broadband evolution and look forward to working with the CDG's strong member ecosystem to enable the market for UMB-based mobile broadband services."

"UMB not only provides very high-peak data rates, but it extends a substantially enhanced user experience throughout the whole coverage area," said Zhu Jinyun, General Manager of ZTE CDMA product. "Its interference management schemes and advanced antenna techniques are key components to enabling operators to deliver an overall excellent user experience. These are precisely the types of features, combined with our own technology innovations, which will give ZTE a distinct advantage in the market."

The growth of high-speed data capabilities is energizing the market for converged devices - ones that leverage the power of the Internet to enable voice, video and broadband data communications on a single platform. The UMB solution is an excellent platform for serving a variety of mobile devices, such as PC notebooks, audio/video players, game consoles, PDAs and consumer electronics devices. It's a technology that inspires the imagination, and the corporations above will build UMB infrastructure and devices to fulfill the needs of businesses and consumers.

The UMB seminar will feature individual executive presentations on the business, technical and deployment advantages of UMB technology, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with all participating executives.
