According to reports from the Hartford Courant, a 42-year-old man wanted in connection with an assault in New Haven was arrested Wednesday night on Shore Drive in Guilford after drawing a knife on police. Robert Coady, who was wanted for hitting a man twice in the head with a hammer, was located near his relative's house by Officer Michael Doody. Coady attempted to run from police but Doody caught up with him.
The suspect then refused to remove his hands from his pockets. Officer Juan Mulero approached Coady from behind and saw him pull a knife. Mulero responded by drawing his pistol and Doody fired his TASER electronic control device which forced Coady to drop the knife. Two additional hits from the TASER device were needed to subdue Coady for arrest.
"The Tasers probably saved us from a police shooting," Deputy Police Chief Jeff Hutchinson said. "It showed a whole lot of restraint on the part of the officers."
Coady is charged with attempted assault, attempted interfering with an officer, carrying a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, threatening and kidnapping in the events from New Haven and Guilford on Tuesday and Wednesday.
