About Chabad's Children of Chernobyl:

On April 26, 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded, releasing a radioactive material of catastrophic proportions -- 900 times the amount released by the Hiroshima bomb. The Chernobyl explosion is the worst environmental disaster in history. Today the radiation remains a critical issue, causes horrific forms of cancer, birth defects, and heart maladies.

CCOC is dedicated to permanently evacuating children from these deplorable conditions and is the only program to do so. CCOC holds an annual charity gala, Children at Heart, to raise funds for these flights. Last year's event honored Steven Spielberg, fashion designer Elie Tahari, Judge Judy Sheindlin, and Robert and Amy Book. This year's event is scheduled for November 19 at Chelsea Piers, Pier Sixty. The honorees will include philanthropists, Julia and Norman Bobrow.
