Beceem Communications Participates in Latest WiMAX Forum Mobile PlugFest

Company Takes Part of Industry's First Tests of MIMO Technology

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 21, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Beceem Communications, a leading provider of chipsets for Mobile WiMAX technology, today announced its participation in the third WiMAX Forum(r) Mobile WiMAX PlugFest, an interoperability showcase hosted by AT4 Wireless and ETSI in Sophia Antipolis, France. This event is significant because it's the first time that WiMAX Forum tested key Mobile WiMAX(tm) features such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), an intelligent antenna technology that's a fundamental component of Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005).

Held May 13-19, the PlugFest featured 33 system and chipset suppliers, and test equipment vendors. The event helped Beceem and other participants evaluate their solutions' ability to support MIMO, whose benefits include support for higher data rates, resistance to fading and doubling spectrum use efficiency. The PlugFest also tested handover, where a Mobile WiMAX connection is seamlessly transferred between two base stations.

"The PlugFest is an ideal opportunity for ensuring that Mobile WiMAX infrastructure and terminals meet the expectations of service providers and their customers," said David Patterson, VP of Marketing at Beceem. "By participating in the PlugFest, Beceem is continuing its leadership in accelerating the commercialization of Mobile WiMAX."

Beceem Communications Mobile WiMAX solution includes the baseband processor, RF and modem software. Beceem's products include MIMO to enable the highest WiMAX performance available.
