Foundry Networks Pioneers New Data Center Technology With Demonstration of 10 Gigabit Ethernet Over Twisted Pair Copper at Interop Las Vegas

Foundry Networks and SolarFlare Communications Demonstrate 10 Gigabit Ethernet Over Twisted Pair Copper

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, May 23, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Foundry Networks(r) Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, and SolarFlare Communications demonstrates 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) over Twisted pair Copper (10GBASE-T). The active demonstration, which uses Foundry's FastIron(r) LS runs 10GBASE-T over 100m Category 6A cable, is shown in SolarFlare's booth #1774 and the FastIron LS 10GBASE-T module can be viewed at Foundry Networks booth #1425.

The technology demonstration of 10GBASE-T using Foundry's FastIron LS marks a significant milestone for the networking industry. Foundry continues to lead the 10 Gigabit Ethernet market and technology by demonstrating 10GBASE-T, which will become a leading contender for low cost 10GbE connectivity in the Data Center. The demonstration shows two FastIron LS connected using 10GBASE-T running wire-speed 10Gbps traffic. The 10GBASE-T module for the FastIron LS uses SolarFlare Communications 10Xpress(r) SFX7000 10GBASE-T PHY, a 100 meter reach, standards-compliant transceiver that supports installed and new copper cabling infrastructures. In addition, Foundry FastIron LS's 10GBASE-T module is connected to a SolarFlare 10GBASE-T server adapter reference design, which uses SolarFlare's Solarstorn 10G controller silicon and the 10Xpress physical layer silicon, to demonstrate high performance data center server connectivity.

"The Foundry 10GBASE-T uplink module is a critical first step in the industry's ability to offer cost-effective 10G technology to customers and accelerate the 10GbE market. The sweet spot for 10GBASE-T will be inter-switch links and high-performance server connectivity used in the data center. SolarFlare is very pleased that Foundry chose our standards-compliant 100 meter 10GBASE-T transceiver as the basis for this technology demonstration," remarked Bruce Tolley, vice president of marketing at SolarFlare Communications.

The demands on data center are growing dramatically with video becoming more rampantly used and stored in the data center. The need for a cost-effective networking solution is required and 10GBASE-T becomes the ideal solution. Similar to Gigabit Ethernet over Twisted Pair Copper, which became the de facto server connectivity in the data center, 10GBASE-T ensures high-speed networking and cost-effective server connectivity in the data center.

"10GBASE-T, which was standardized last year, is now becoming more mature," said Bob Schiff, vice president and general manager, enterprise business unit for Foundry Networks. "Our demonstration of 10GBASE-T allows us to show our customers our ongoing initiatives to optimize and advance new cost-saving technology within the data center."
