TASER Device Used to End Hostage Situation, Prevent Suicide

WASHINGTON, June 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to reports from The Ottawa Sun in Ontario, Canada, a man walked into a Westboro store Thursday around 3:45 p.m. and began attacking the 63-year-old store owner, demanding his keys. When police arrived on the scene, the man was holding the store owner hostage with a butcher knife and appeared in the front window, demanding that police shoot him in the heart.

By 5:30 p.m. the police were able to negotiate the release of the hostage. Using "flash-bang" diversion tactics, officers were then able to distract the suspect and get close enough to subdue the man with a TASER electronic control device. Police Inspector Terry Charbot said the team had to react quickly because the suspect was trying to injure himself with the knife, but added that his injuries appeared minor.

The suspect, identified as a local antique dealer, was taken out of the store on a gurney and put in an ambulance. The store owner was treated on the scene for a laceration to the forehead. A motive in the hostage situation is unclear.
