ST. HELENA, Calif., June 21, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the old days, in the Old West? Embark on an adventure to remember as author Jon Garate brings you Stories From The Living Room: A Golden Heritage From The Old West. Read and discover fascinating tales of how the Old West lived.

Think of a society where there are no laws, no lawmen, and almost no government, where every household had at least one gun, yet people didn't kill each other. Imagine a community where there were no churches, but every town had a bar, and yet there were no jails, and people never locked their doors. Stories From The Living Room is a compilation of short true stories of real homesteaders, pioneers, and cowboys in the Old West, told from the point of view of the author, who himself is one of the old-time cowboys. With his wonderful gift of storytelling, Garate brings to life oral histories, vividly recounting the stories of his generation, and generations before him, in a way that makes you feel you are right there when the exciting events happened.

From Cowboys to Indians, from the justice system to horse thieves, from the one room school to the outhouse, and many, many more, Stories From The Living Room tells many fun, unbelievable, yet true and often humorous tales that entertain and sometimes shock. Through these true stories of real people who lived and survived in a very harsh environment, readers will see the Old West from a close-up perspective found nowhere else.

Stories from the Living Room is recommended by John Ritchie, past president of the California Historical Society, and by Jack Morgan of the Scripps publishing company. About the Author

Jon Garate, was born, raised, and lived among pioneers, homesteaders, cowboys, and other characters of the Old West. The Madeline Plains, which is the setting for this book, is in a very remote area of northeast California. It is a hard, harsh high-desert mountain country where, according to the author's father, "about the only thing you could raise was dust, hell, and kids." But some, including the Garate family, succeeded in raising some cattle and sheep for 4 generations. Jon, a master storyteller, learned the art from his father and other old-timers. He re-creates an atmosphere where you will feel like you are right there in the living room of the old ranch house among the cowboys, pioneers and homesteaders, listening to their tales of the "Good Old Days". The stories are true. The people are real. The events are real. The way of life depicted in the stories is as genuine. So, "Come on in", take a trip back in time, and get some good laughs along the way. Jon's education consists of an MM Degree (Master of Mediocrity) from OCSHK (Old Cowboy School of Hark Knocks), where he learned to ride with the old-time cowboys, and drove a team of horses and wagon before learning to drive an automobile. He attended 8 years in a one-room school, 4 years of high school, and earned a BA degree in Industrial Arts.
