Photo Release -- Northrop Grumman Awarded $20.6 Million Contract for USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Work


NEWPORT NEWS, Va., June 26, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Navy valued at $20.6 million for work on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

The company's Newport News sector will perform the work, which includes planning, execution and continuous maintenance efforts to support the remaining service life of USS Enterprise, leading up to its inactivation in 2013.

"This contract is the culmination of significant team work and collaboration between the Navy and our team of highly specialized maintenance professionals devoted to jointly maintaining this complex ship," said Ken Mahler, vice president of aircraft carrier overhaul programs for Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector. "The work authorized by this contract will help ensure the USS Enterprise is thoughtfully maintained and remains operationally ready to serve the nation's needs throughout the next several years."

Work under this contract includes advance planning, design, documentation, engineering, material procurement, shipboard inspections, fabrication and preliminary facility work for an extended dry dock maintenance period in 2008. Additional work includes engineering services to support modernizing and reconfiguring the carrier. It also provides funding options for planning and executing continuous maintenance availabilities through 2011 as well as planning for the carrier's inactivation. Approximately 600 employees will support this work at peak performance periods.

USS Enterprise is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the only ship of its class. It was built by Northrop Grumman Newport News and joined the U.S. Navy's fleet in 1961. Northrop Grumman has been responsible for accomplishing the majority of scheduled and emergent maintenance on USS Enterprise since 2004.
