PHILADELPHIA, June 26, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- State Senator Vincent Hughes will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the James Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Classic (JHMSF) from July 13-16 with a full weekend of high-level events that span three states.
A major highlight of the upcoming JHMSF Golf Classic weekend is a special reunion of previously honored African-American Legends of Golf, which include PGA greats such as Charles Sifford, Lee Elder, Pete Brown, Charlie Owens, Calvin Peete, and Walter Morgan as well as local trailblazers such as Bill Bishop, Ernest Oglesby, and the late Phyllis Meekins and the induction of 97 year old James Henry Clark, the oldest living African-American caddy in the U.S. into this important group.
The JHMSF Golf Classic has been well recognized for the investment that it is making in the future through the lives of local students. Additionally, it has been nationally lauded for its commitment to honor the past by celebrating the lives of African-American golfers who represent a rich legacy of contributions to the sport.
The golf classic, which is named in honor of Senator Hughes' late father James Hughes, raises scholarship monies for graduates of Philadelphia public high schools who attend one of the 14 PA State System of Higher Education universities. Over the years, the fund has raised and disbursed approximately $1 million to help deserving students attain the academic, personal and professional skills they need to succeed in the global marketplace.
