Waste Management of Alameda County Restores Full Service

Recycling Service to Resume On July 16

OAKLAND, Calif., July 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Waste Management of Alameda County (WMAC) today announced that it has been able to restore weekly residential garbage, yard waste and commercial waste collection service at all locations. Also, starting July 16, regular curbside recycling services will resume.

"We apologize to our customers for the delays in service and appreciate their patience as we work to catch up on our routes," said James Devlin, area vice president for Waste Management. "We have been working hard and are now in a position to offer weekly service to all of our customers."

WMAC also announced that quantity of materials collected this week is approaching the average collection levels from before the work stoppage, demonstrating the company's improving ability to maintain regular service levels.

"On July 2nd, before the work stoppage, we took in 1,868 tons of garbage and 373 tons of yard waste. On July 10th, we averaged 1,724 tons of garbage and 342 tons of yard waste -- virtually the same levels as before the work stoppage," said Devlin.

WMAC remains committed to reaching a fair and balanced contract with the Teamsters Local 70; however, the union has refused to meet or to discuss the company's proposals.

"We want nothing more than to get an agreement with the union that will keep our drivers and our communities safe, and maintains the high level of wages and benefits that our employees currently enjoy," said Devlin. "But this cannot be achieved without the union fulfilling its obligation under federal labor law to bargain in good faith with the company."
