Competitive Technologies Urges Use of Technology to Detect Structural Steel Fissures

FAIRFIELD, Conn., Aug. 2, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Competitive Technologies, Inc. (AMEX:CTT) today urged all responsible government individuals to review mechanisms in place for detecting steel fissures in bridges and other significant infrastructures. CTT advised that cracks in structural materials could be detected through a paint technology developed at Lehigh University. The paint coating technology detects cracks in structural materials through a built-in, self-activating, crack-indicating or warning system that detects fissures through an opposite color paint highlighting the fissures as they occur. Professional or layman observers can readily detect this highlighting of fissures through routine inspection.

"The Interstate 35W bridge collapse yesterday in Minneapolis, with its resultant loss of life, is a strong indicator of the aging infrastructure throughout this country and the world and its inherent consequences," said John B. Nano, CTT's Chairman, President and CEO. "In June of 1983, in my home state of Connecticut, the Mianus River Bridge collapsed with equally tragic results. In 1981, the collapse of the walkway surrounding the Kansas City Hyatt Regency was another example, incurring significant loss of life. There are times when these catastrophes are the result of design flaws, but often times they are due to deterioration of structural materials. We are urging all those responsible for infrastructure in their localities to look carefully at this issue. CTT is notifying federal, state and local transportation departments of the availability of this patented technology."

This method of crack detection utilizes a surface coating to the structure that includes microcapsules which contain a second color that are subject to breakage upon detection of a crack or fatigue. The microcapsule releases a dye, which becomes visible at the surface shortly after the substrate material starts to deteriorate.
