Without TASER, Man 'Certainly Would Have Been Shot'

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following News Alert:

According to reports from The Red Bluff Daily News in California, Lane McKinney, 44, called 911 demanding to speak to an officer. He said he had a present for the police -- a bullet.

Officers surrounded McKinney's home at the Sale Lane Apartment complex around 1:40pm Tuesday, instructing dispatch to call and request that McKinney come outside to the officers. He came out brandishing two knives, one in each hand, and refused repeated orders to remain still. When it became apparent McKinney might throw the knives, Detective Dan Flowerdew acted quickly to save McKinney's life, subduing him in the flank with a TASER electronic control device.

"I am certain he would have been shot," said Flowerdew. "You never know when you just might be the one that has the ability to react."

Flowerdew said most of the patrol officers at the department carry TASER technology and that they are a valuable device. He stated that this incident is evidence that TASER devices can save hundreds of thousand of dollars in medical bills and are safer for suspects and officers alike.

McKinney was arrested without further incident, and charged with threatening an officer with a deadly weapon. He was booked at the Tehama County Jail.
