Beceem Takes HARQ to the (Wi)MAX and Accomplishes Another Industry First

BSC200 Chipset Demonstrates Maximum HARQ Performance Specified in the WiMAX Profile, Exceeding 20Mbps Sustainable Throughput

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 14, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Beceem Communications (www.beceem.com), a leading provider of chipsets for Mobile WiMAX, today announced that the company has successfully completed HARQ demonstrations exceeding a sustainable throughput of 20Mbps, operating the chipset in 'Category 4' HARQ mode (the highest performance HARQ mode in the WiMAX Forum Profile). This milestone was achieved shortly after Beceem established the speed record for Mobile WiMAX when demonstrating 33 Mbps application layer throughput in MIMO mode.

HARQ, which stands for Hybrid Automatic Repeat ReQuest, is a technique that enables fast recovery from transmission errors in wireless networks by storing defective packets and then combining them with subsequent retransmissions of the same packet. HARQ is a particularly useful feature when users experience weak or rapidly changing channel conditions, as often found when traveling at high speeds, during hand-off between cells, or at cell edges. The ability to operate terminals in high performance HARQ mode improves user experience and system performance even under the most challenging conditions. Beceem's accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as it is a reflection of how advanced chip architecture enables industry leading system performance. Having achieved this level of performance with its BCS200 chipset, Beceem is raising the bar for Mobile WiMAX terminals.

"Users of Mobile Broadband services expect high performance, and Operators are particularly concerned about maintaining seamless high-speed connectivity in their networks at all times," said Lars Johnsson, vice president of Business Development for Beceem. "Many chipsets can provide basic connectivity when the signal is strong, but the BCS200 clearly stands out with its ability to perform under the most challenging conditions. Our HARQ implementation is one of the key features that allows operators to maximize network performance, and it also highlights the maturity and leadership of our Mobile WiMAX chipsets."

BCS200 chipset samples and reference design kits are immediately available. For more information, please visit www.beceem.com.
