NEW YORK, Aug. 24, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- As of mid-August, short interest in 2,747 NASDAQ Global Market(sm) securities totaled 8,809,420,409 shares compared with 9,137,735,499 shares in 2,737 Global Market issues for the month of July. The August short interest represents 3.54 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.54 days in July.
Short interest in 526 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 191,667,395 shares for August, compared with 200,624,163 shares in 527 securities for the month of July. This represents 3.51 days average daily volume, compared with last month's figure of 3.08.
In summary, short interest in all 3,273 NASDAQ(r) securities totaled 9,001,087,804 shares for August, compared with 3,264 issues and 9,338,359,662 shares in July. This is 3.54 days average daily volume, compared with last month's average of 4.50 days.
The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. The monthly NASDAQ short interest figures are current as of the 15th of the month and are released to the media after the market close on the seventh business day following that date.
