ADVA Optical Networking Deploys 100,000 Ethernet Access Ports to BT Group

Six Year Relationship Results in One of the World's Largest Installed Bases of Advanced Ethernet Connectivity

YORK/LONDON, United Kingdom and MARTINSRIED/MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 18, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- ADVA Optical Networking today announced that it has deployed more than 100,000 Ethernet access ports to BT Group, one of the world's leading communications providers. ADVA Optical Networking's Ethernet access portfolio, featuring Etherjack(r) technology, provides BT Group and more than 100 carriers across the globe with advanced Ethernet demarcation, extension and aggregation services. These services ensure that BT Group is able to deliver new bandwidth-intensive applications to its expanding business and residential markets with unparalleled flexibility, control and management.

BT Group is one of the world's leading providers of communications solutions and services operating in 170 countries. BT Group's principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet products and services. BT Group consists principally of four lines of business: BT Global Services, Openreach, BT Retail and BT Wholesale. The delivery of Ethernet services is a key focus of BT Group, as it seeks to offer fast, flexible and secure infrastructures to its customers. BT Group's service-orientated structure is exemplified by its 21st Century Network (21CN), one of the world's largest converged next-generation networks.

Since 2001, ADVA Optical Networking has played a key role in BT Group's Ethernet access strategy. Most of the 100,000 Ethernet ports deployed by ADVA Optical Networking support BT Group's 14 Ethernet services, covering distances between 10-40km and ranging in speeds from 1Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s. These services support a number of vital business applications, including LAN extension, ISP Gateway access, Gigabit SAN links and Backhaul Extension. Across the globe, enterprise networks as varied as research-and-education, healthcare and finance are using these Ethernet services for mission-critical data transfer and operation of their communications networks.

"One hundred thousand Ethernet ports deployed marks a significant milestone in our relationship with BT Group," stated Reg Armitage, ADVA Optical Networking's VP of Northern European sales. "Together we have created one of the world's largest installed base of Ethernet products; one that continues to grow on a daily basis. As BT Group transitions to 21CN, the demand for intelligent Ethernet services increases and as one of 21CN's ten strategic vendors we are ideally placed to fulfil their needs."

Infonetics Research recently announced ADVA Optical Networking as the world's leading provider of Ethernet Access Devices (EAD) with a 32 percent market share. Earlier this year, ADVA Optical Networking confirmed its position as the market leader in the EAD space with the launch of its latest Ethernet device, the ADVA FSP 150CCf-825. This product has already met with significant market success and has been selected for deployment throughout BT 21CN.

"This announcement underscores ADVA Optical Networking's principal position in the EAD market," commented Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. "We can see BT's leadership in the introduction of Ethernet as the preferred network access technology reflected around the globe as other carriers migrate from legacy technologies to carrier-class Ethernet services, helping drive the rapid growth in the Ethernet market. The ADVA FSP 150 family is positioned to be in the leader position for some time to come."
