Today CEO of DONG Energy, Anders Eldrup, opened the Burbo Bank wind farm, located offshore Liverpool, England. UK Minister of State for Energy, Malcolm Wicks, the Danish Minister for Transport and Energy, Jakob Axel Nielsen, local government representatives, partners and employees from DONG Energy took part in the opening ceremony. At 13.30 today, Anders Eldrup, CEO of DONG Energy, along with, Malcolm Wicks UK Minister of State for Energy and Jakob Axel Nielsen Danish Minister for Transport and Energy officially opened Burbo Bank, the offshore wind farm located in the Irish Sea 10 kilometres off the English west coast, close to Liverpool. The wind farm consists of 25 3.6 MW Siemens wind turbines, with a total production capacity of 90 MW. The 25 wind turbines will be able to produce 315 million kWh annually, which is equivalent to the yearly consumption of 80,000 households. Including Burbo Bank DONG Energy has now been involved in the construction of three offshore wind farms in England . ”With the inauguration of Burbo Bank, we strengthen our position in the British market. Not only is DONG Energy one of the most active companies involved in offshore wind projects, we are a considerable gas supplier, with the newly-onstream gas field Ormen Lange in Norway, and we are also active in offshore activities in the area West of Shetland. At the inauguration ceremony, where local politicians, MPs and partners participated, the English Minister of State for Energy, Malcolm Wicks said: “The UK is an island nation with some of the best wind resources in Europe, if not the world. We have an opportunity to be a global leader in the offshore wind farm sector and the potential economic and environmental benefits are enormous. If we are to achieve our renewables aims we must get more offshore wind farms built. It pleases me greatly to see Burbo Bank in operation. The North West is proving to be a real powerhouse for offshore wind energy.” The Danish Minister for Transport and Energy, Jakob Axel Nielsen was pleased with the Danish involvement in the British wind power venture. ”The challenge with CO2 emissions is global. The Burbo Bank offshore wind farm covers an area of 10 square kilometres. Each of the 25 wind turbines has a tip height of approximately 140 metres above sea level. In England DONG Energy is already co-owner of the Barrow offshore wind farm on the west coast and plans to construct the Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm located in the Thames estuary on the east coast of England.
