The Court of Appeal of Helsinki has on 24 October 2007 issued decision about Ruukki Group Plc's litigation to oblige Rautaruukki Oyj to refrain from using the name “Ruukki”. The Court of Appeal of Helsinki has decided not to change the decision issued by the District Court on 16 November 2006 and has dismissed Ruukki Group Plc's claims. Ruukki Group was ordered to compensate all Rautaruukki Oyj's legal costs of approximately 83 thousand euros plus interests. The Court of Appeal stated that since the word “ruukki" (foundry) is a general Finnish word, it can not be considered identifying thus Ruukki Group does not have an exclusive right to use it. The dispute is still pending at the Market Court on a different basis. The process will begin during 2007. The Board of Appeal of the National Board of Patents and Registration is dealing with Ruukki Group's complaint about Rautaruukki Oyj's application for red Ruukki trademark. Ruukki Group has also made a claim to Office for Harmonisation of Internal Markets opposing Rautaruukki's application for EU-wide trademark relating to the word ruukki and the red ruukki trademark.
