SKF and Knorr-Bremse to jointly develop specialized technology to monitor
railway bogies

SKF and Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH have started a joint
project to develop condition monitoring capability for rolling stock integrated
in Knorr-Bremse´s brake control systems.

The new monitoring system will add next generation functionality, enabling to
remotely monitor and gather data from each bogie system - while the train is in
full service on the track. As a result, the train operator or the service
provider will be able to achieve early faulty detection of defects in order to
avoid or reduce secondary damages through component failures. The new system
enables the operator to introduce condition-based maintenance and reduce life
cycle costs.

The monitoring solution from SKF will be based on their world leading SKF
on-line system for trains IMx-R and will involve joint development of a
specialized electronic monitoring board, capable of recording and diagnosing
conditional data of railway vehicles, which is to be integrated into
Knorr-Bremse brake control systems.
