To Serve and Protect -- When Convenient -- Author and Retired Cop James Campbell Writes a Fictionalized Account (Hopefully!) of Police Corruption

CONLEY, Ga., Nov. 9, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- America's Finest; the men and women in uniform whose duty it is to serve and protect. With an almost constant exposure to crime, violence, and greed, what happens when a cop gets tempted and seduced by the dark side of human nature? Author and retired cop James Campbell tackles this and other powerful themes -- such as racial discrimination, illegal drugs, as well as positive ones such as loyalty and friendship -- in the riveting novel Beneath The Badge.

In 1967, during an era of rapid social changes, the Atlanta Police Department was entering its second difficult year of integration. Complicating things was that it was struggling desperately with police corruption. As rookies going into unknown territory, Jonab and his friend David Moore are considered "the new breed" -- militarily trained, Vietnam experienced, and quick to respond to new realities. They are the beginning of the "New South", breaking down the old stigma of racism that had plagued the department for the past twenty years.

Moore, who was Jonab's best friend, Vietnam buddy, and roommate, eventually becomes an FBI Agent. Posing as a police officer, he goes undercover to get the low-down on an illegal drugs operation. In an unfortunate twist, he is gunned down while investigating a top secret warehouse burglary committed by cops; an operation that was supposed to solve the mystery of the police corruption. Instead, it opens up a whole new investigation for rookie Jonab, who has vowed to find whoever killed his friend -- at any cost. Even if they were cops.

Campbell, with an insider's perspective, gives a realistic portrayal of the temptations and difficulties of police life. With an engrossing plot, fast-paced action, and a stunning grasp of the intricacies of law enforcement, a chance to look Beneath The Badge is a view that is hard to resist.
