QLogic SANblade Fibre Channel HBAs First in OpenSolaris Storage Community to Deliver Target Mode Capabilities

Tools for OpenSolaris Developers to Build SAN-based Storage Now Available

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Dec. 12, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq:QLGC), a leader in networking for storage and high performance computing (HPC), today announced the availability of the industry's first Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBA) with target mode capabilities for the OpenSolaris(tm) Storage community. Building on the largest installed base of 2Gb and 4Gb Fibre Channel HBAs in Solaris(tm) environments, QLogic(r) SANblade(r) HBAs enable enterprise users to use the Solaris OS in target-mode applications, making it possible for developers to build SAN-based storage systems based on Solaris. As an active member in the OpenSolaris community and a key member of the Sun ecosystem, QLogic fully supports both initiator and target mode capabilities under OpenSolaris for its full line of SANblade Fibre Channel HBAs.

The OpenSolaris Storage community, a Sun sponsored project, was created as a place for collaboration and conversation around OpenSolaris storage technology for developers, ISVs, and customers to leverage open source to drive innovation and new market opportunities for storage. By making their Fibre Channel HBA technology available for OpenSolaris, QLogic has contributed a key component of the storage stack to the open source world.

"Building on our long-standing relationship with Sun and the OpenSolaris community, we are pleased to be the first company to deliver Fibre Channel HBAs for target mode applications using OpenSolaris," said Amit Vashi, vice president of marketing, QLogic Host Solutions Group. "The Solaris platform has been a key element in the advancement of storage area networking and the OpenSolaris storage project has ensured that this important operating system delivers increasingly greater functionality and innovation in the enterprise."

"QLogic, a long-standing partner of Sun and a member of the OpenSolaris community, has delivered a critical component to the enterprise," said David Kenyon, vice-president, Storage Marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "SANblade Fibre Channel solutions make it possible for Global 2000 customers to implement open, highly functional storage networks. Likewise this contribution to the community helps ensure greater interoperability and more functionality from SAN networks for OpenSolaris users and validates our strategy to open source every software product at Sun, literally billions of dollars in assets, and fueling the communities and innovation around these technologies."

A Broad Opportunity for the Open Source Community

More than 95 percent of Fibre Channel HBAs in Solaris OS environments are from QLogic. This large installed base encompasses the entire range of Sun application and hardware environments. OpenSolaris presents a rich opportunity for developers using open source to add functionality or customize storage technology for new applications and platforms.
