The Power Situation in Norway as of 26 November

Lysaker, 26 November 2003

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

The level in the Norwegian water reservoirs dropped with 1.6 percentage points in week 47 and was 63.7 percent full as of Monday 24 November. For the first time this year, the reservoir level reached last years reservoir level, when it was 63.5 per cent full. The reservoir level in the Swedish water reservoirs dropped 1.9 percentage points during week 47 and was 58 per cent full at the beginning of week 48.

Low precipitation led to a somewhat lower influx than normal during week 47. For the present week mild weather is expected to continue, but no major changes in the influx.

The Norwegian power consumption increased with 66 GWh from week 46 to week 47. At the same time, the Norwegian production fell with 57 GWh. This means that Norway's net import increased with 123 GWh from week 46 to week 47. Increased production in Sweden and Zealand has made such increase in imports possible. The Norwegian import in the nighttime and during the weekend is nevertheless limited by low transmission capacity from Sweden to Southern Norway due to internal bottleneck problems in Sweden. In addition, 50 per cent of the transmission capacity between Jutland and Norway is out of order overhauling repairs.
