The Power Situation in Norway as of 15 June 2005

Lysaker, 15 June 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

In the last couple of weeks there has been a slower increase in the reservoirs levels than normal, due to late snow melt and high hydro-power production. In week 23 the level increased with 3.8 percentage points to 45.6 percent. The normal reservoir level at the end of week 23 is 54.9 percent. In Sweden, the filling level was 49.8 percent, after an increase of 6.5 percentage points from last week.

The inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 5.3 TWh in week 23. This is only 80 percent of normal, despite more precipitation than normal. Cold weather the last weeks has resulted in less snow melt and that the accumulated snow is well above normal. In this week it is expected warmer weather in the south of Norway. This will affect the snow melt and give high inflows to the reservoirs.

Increased electricity prices in Germany and declining prices in the Nordic countries have increased the price gap between these markets. As a consequence of this the Nordic exports to Germany increased with 110 GWh from week 22.
